Using discourse markers to negotiate epistemic stance: A view from situated language use

Abstract In this paper, I analyse the usage of a discourse marker =mari, belonging to the epistemic paradigm attested in Upper Napo Kichwa (Quechuan, Ecuador). I show that the use of =mari indicates that the information is known well to the speaker, but also to some extent familiar to the addressee. In situated language use, the marker contributes to creating a knowing epistemic stance of the speaker. The analysis presented here is based on a 13-h documentary corpus of interactive Upper Napo Kichwa discourse, recorded on audio and video. How to do things with signs. The formulation of directives on signs in public spaces

Abstract This paper analyzes signs and written messages aimed at regulating people's behavior in public spaces. Based on a collection of more than 700 verbal and pictographic signs, the paper focuses on how the formulation of the directives reflect and construct the authors' deontic authority, how they account for the social legitimacy of the directive and how they seek to evoke the addressee's goodwill and cooperativeness. The English pronunciation teaching in Europe survey: selected results

This paper provides an overview of the main findings from a European-wide on-line survey of English pronunciation teaching practices. Both quantitative and qualitative data from seven countries (Finland, France, Germany, Macedonia, Poland, Spain and Switzerland) are presented, focusing on teachers' comments about:
 ● their own pronunciation,
 ● their training,
 ● their learners’ goals, skills, motivation and aspirations,
 ● their preferences for certain varieties (and their perception of their students' preferences).

Lärarens val av undervisningspraktiker spelar en avgörande roll för elevers inlärningsresultat. I lärarkognitionen ingår förmågan att på adekvata sätt styra och handleda elevens inlärningsprocess och utvärdera dess utgång med livslångt lärande som huvudsyfte. I artikeln kartläggs och analyseras vilka samband som finns mellan undervisningspraktiker och elevers inlärningsresultat i svenskans långa lärokurs i slutet av den grundläggande utbildningen. Norwegian children's acquisition of the dialect feature r

The pronunciation of r is a central dialect feature of Norwegian. The main division is between a front and a back pronunciation. The back realization is acquired relatively early (around age 4), while the front realization is one of the most problematic sounds to acquire, and substitution sounds are frequent. Using two data collection points, we show how four children learning Norwegian start by substituting r use of the r of their dialect area or idiolectal surroundings.
